New Design

You may have noticed a change this week on your planning screen. You could previously select zero wind or forecast weather in the user account settings. Now this option is available as a drop down on the planning page. Please, see the screenshot below.

The following settings availiable:

  • Use forecast next 5 days and then zero winds;
  • Use forecast next 5 days and then historic winds;
  • Use zero winds;
  • Use historic winds.

This selector has an additional option to select 10 year historic weather for long term planning purposes.

Historic Winds

‘Historic winds’ will give the opportunity to always receive data in relation to historical wind averages for the time of year displayed for fuel/time calculations. This will be of interest for those who need to plan a flight for a future date (for a date beyond which forecasts are not available) for reasons such as commercial viability and/or aircraft capability.

The data is sourced from the Global Forecast System (GFS), which is a weather forecast model produced by the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP). Taking into consideration more extremes of weather in the past decades, we have decided to take the past 10 years for the time range for this feature, as this ensures more meaningful averages.
