File a "Formation" Flight Plan

Written by directory | Jun 4, 2014 5:45:18 PM

Introduction

RocketRoute makes filing a flight plan for a formation of aircraft, simple and straightforward.

Formation flying is a challenging and rewarding experience for any pilot and can be used when flying in a group, when on tour, or as part of an airshow / air display.

RocketRoute has put the formation flight plan function into practice when it supported a D-Day airborne formation over 13 aircraft flying between the UK and Normandy in 2014. Read More

Step 1 Create the route

Create a route and flight plan as you normally would, using the RocketRoute system. Formation flight plans can be used for VFR flights.

Make sure you use the lead aircraft for the formation when preparing the flight plan.

If you are ever in doubt, you can file individual flight plans for each aircraft.

Step 2 Select number of aircraft and Add RMK/ to Field 18

Scroll down to see the 'Plan Options' section. Specify the number of aircraft. You may also add a label to the flight. It will be displayed in the list of the flights and will point out the formation from the other flights.

Then open the 'Field 18' section. Add a remark that would reveal the number and the model of aircraft included.

Press the "+" button to add a new remark.

Press the "-" button to remove a remark if necessary.

In the remark field enter the details of the formation including the types of the other aircraft that are included in the formation.

You can add multiple RMK/ fields - so you can also include further contact names, telephone numbers as necessary.

Adjust this and press Next.

Step 3 File Flight Plan

RocketRoute will automatically add details of the formation flight to the ICAO flight plan form when it is filed. An example with a PC12 as the formation leader is provided below as example. Once filed you can delay, bring forward, cancel and manage the flight plan in the normal way.
