Embraer EMB-135BJ Legacy 650
The EMBRAER EMB 135BJ Legacy 650 is a twin-engined corporate jet aircraft long-range version for up to 14 passengers produced by the Brazilian manufacturer Embraer (Empresa Brasileira de Aeronautica, S.A.). The business jet Legacy 650 is based on the EMBRAER ERJ 135 regional airliner.
Background / History
A derivative of the popular EMB-145 jetliner, the Legacy was Embraer’s first business jet in its history. Following the success of the 145, Embraer certified the EMB-135 in 1999. Embraer’s Legacy 600, an EMB-135 fitted with winglets and auxiliary fuel tanks allowed it to fly 3,200 nm with 10 passengers. The airplane won much praise from its operators due to its simplicity, dispatch reliability, and operating economy. The Legacy 650 is a longer-range version of the Legacy 600 with a stronger airframe and landing gear to accommodate more fuel for the more efficient new engines. The range is increased up to 3,900 miles with 4 passengers. The first delivery took place in November 2010. FAA certified the Embraer 650 in February 2011.
Power
Power is provided by 2 Rolls-Royce AE3007A2 engines, providing 9,020 pounds of thrust each. The engines are a variant of the A1E with 22 fan blades as opposed to 24 on the older models, a 38.5-inch diameter fan, and revised FADEC control. It has a 5:1 bypass ratio with a 14-stage high-pressure compressor, a 2-stage high-pressure turbine, and a 3-stage low-pressure turbine that powers the fan.
Avionics
A new Primus Elite avionics suite graces the panel with flat-panel displays, multi-waypoint coupled VNAV along with WAAS-enabled GPS receivers, an LPV approach capability, and RNP 0.3 navigation guidance. Dual stand-alone CMC electronic flight bags will support Embraer’s OPERA and Easy Dispatch mission planning software.
Design Features
The Legacy 650 is a twin turbofan-powered medium-range executive transport. A derivative of the EMB-145, the Legacy features auxiliary fuel tanks, winglets, and interior modifications. The airframe is a conventional semi-monocoque construction–stressed skins, hoop frames, and longitudinal stringers. Composites are used for fairings, primary and secondary control surfaces, and main landing gear doors.
Accommodations
Some creature comfort refinements have been included in the makeover. More sound insulation is being added, and Inmarsat SwiftBroadband System connectivity, including voice-over IP, secure data VPN functionality, and moderate speed internet access will keep passengers connected. A 7.8-foot long forward galley and an externally serviced lavatory at the rear of the cabin are included as part of the two 13-passenger and two 14-passenger cabin layouts offered. The cabin has a dropped center aisle to increase headroom and the total cabin volume is 1,650 cubic feet (46.7 cu.m).
